$9,000 Top Price for 13th Annual On Property Sale

QUEENSLAND buyers were a strong force at Barana Simmental stud’s 13th annual on-property sale last Friday, where bulls reached a top of $9000 twice.
Stud principals Peter and Charmaine Cook, Coolah, offered 42 bulls of which 38 sold for an average of $5144 and a 90 per cent clearance.
A selection of joined and unjoined heifers were also up for grabs, with nine selling from 12 offered, to top at $4000 and average $1800.
The first bull to hit the top price was 21-month-old Barana Gulliver G207.
The red bull, sired by 2011 Brisbane Ekka senior and grand champion bull Barana Echuca E024 and out of a Brewers dam, weighed in at 958 kilograms with a scrotal circumference of 46 centimetres, eye muscle area (EMA) of 140 square centimetres and rib fat of nine millimetres.
Gulliver will go out to Cobar, purchased in partnership by Richard Whiteman and Daniel Stephens, who both went on to purchase another bull each.
Mr Whiteman took home Barana G131, a 23-month-old son of Barana Emotion E059, for $4000.
An unregistered black polled Simmental bull by Long Valley Destiny D202 was the second purchase for Mr Stephens, who paid $7000.
Repeat clients Ron and Colleen Dean, Mallanganee near Casino, paid top dollar for a yearling bull last year and came back again this year to take home the equal top priced bull, 23-month-old Barana Garrad.
Garrad was the among the first progeny drop of its sire, Barana Emotion E059 to be offered and will “fit in well” with the Dean’s weaner operation, Mr Dean said.
Garrad weighed 970kg, had an EMA of 139cm2 and a rib fat measurement of 7mm.
Barana Gladiator G45 made the second highest price of the day, selling for $8000 to the Franz family, Burnett Livestock, Manumbar, Qld.
Gladiator was the heaviest bull offered on the day, weighing 1006kg with an EMA of 140cm2.
The Franz family also took home a heifer by the same sire as Gladiator, Bullockhills Buster B011, for $1500.
Two 2011-drop Shorthorn bulls were also offered with one, Barana Gladiator, who was first in his class at Brisbane last year, selling for $3000.
In the female offering, a daughter of Barana Echuca E024, Barana Goodridge, made the top price of $4000, bought by the Jarret family, Kyogle.
Goodridge had been depastured to red polled Simmental bull, Waterfront Fabian F072, since May 10.
The Jarret family went on to buy another three heifers, including another by Echuca to average $2375.
Charlie Lumby, BH Holdings, Springsure, Qld was also among the volume buyers, taking home six bulls to top at $6000 and average $4667.
Jack Ranken, “Glenlogan”, Spring Ridge bought six bulls to top at $5000 and average $4333 for his selection.
Barana Simmental stud principal Peter Cook said he was happy with the sale results and believed this year’s sale draft suited the current seasonal conditions.
“The majority are soft, early maturing, middle of the road type bulls- I believe this style of bull will introduce cattle into a herd that will eat less, have the ability to finish with higher yields and put more dollars in your pocket,” he said.
The sale was conducted by Elders, Dubbo and Davidson Cameron and Company, Gunnedah with Elders’ Andy McGeoch and Davidson Cameron and Company’s Luke Scicluna sharing auctioneering duties.
